Who We Are
The partnership of Nippon Yusen Kaisha or NYK Line of Japan, one of the
world’s
oldest and largest shipping companies founded in 1885, and the Transnational
Diversified
Group (TDG), a Filipino-owned business conglomerate established in 1976 has
spanned
decades of solid relationship. This evolved into different businesses such as shipping, ship
crewing, logistics, and back office operations, among others. The ship crewing business of
NYK
Line
and TDG is being managed by NYK-Fil Ship Management, Inc. (NYK-FIL) which to date, is
considered
as
the major supplier of highly qualified officers and crew to NYK Line vessels.
NYK-FIL, in its mission to consistently provide quality officers for NYK Line vessels,
proposed
the
establishment of a maritime school in 2005 which gave birth to NYK-Transnational Institute
Foundation, Inc. (NTIF). NTIF is the owner of NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA), a maritime
school
duly approved by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) in 2006.
Believing in the vision and mission of the school, no less than Her Excellency President Gloria
Macapagal-Arroyo and former President Fidel V. Ramos graced the NTMA Cornerstone-laying Ceremony
on
26 November 2005. NTMA started its operation in June 2007.
NYK-TDG Maritime Academy represents the single biggest investment in the Philippines of NYK Line
and
TDG as their corporate social responsibility and contribution to the global competitiveness of
the
Filipino Merchant Marine Officers.
NTMA is the first maritime school put up in the Philippines by a foreign shipowner in
partnership
with a Filipino company. It occupies a ten-hectare campus located in a major industrial zone
southwest of the nation’s capital Metro Manila. The Academy promotes the highest standards in
maritime education through a competency and outcomes-based maritime industry-driven
curriculum that employs a variety of teaching methods delivered by highly qualified
faculty who themselves are active seafarers. At NTMA which is a boarding
school,
Cadets have direct and extensive access to modern facilities and equipment.
After successfully passing three (3) years of academic requirements in campus, Cadets have
guaranteed one-year structured shipboard training in NYK training ships and
regular
cargo vessels.
NTMA is an “Officer school.” The Academy has produced over a thousand graduates
since its first batch of graduates in 2011. NTMA graduates have successfully passed the
licensure
examinations for deck and engine officers conducted by the Philippine government.
NTMA implements together with NYK-Fil Ship Management, Inc. (NYK-FIL) an Education-to
Employment-to-Retention-to-Retirement (E2R2) strategy for the career development of its
graduates.
NYK-FIL, a crew manning agency established in 1989 owned by NYK Line and TDG, handles the
professional growth of Filipino seafarers employed by NYK Line. NTMA graduates are provided with
guaranteed employment on board various NYK Line vessels with opportunities to
reach
their highest potential as Masters (Captain) or Chief Engineer onboard or as technical
instructors
or shipping executives ashore.
Under a Study-Now-Pay-Later Program , NTMA provides full financial assistance
and
support to cadets who come from indigent families
